


In my time… working in the area of Consulting was seen as something influential, of high prestige, that granted success (especially individual). An activity that allowed us to meet many people, many organisational realities, providing constant learning, always in crazy rhythms, “flurries” and high pressure.
I still think that Consulting (and training!) allows us to do many of these things, while others indicate more questionable drives. For me. Over these 20 years in Consulting, I have been changing, very naturally, my analysis “lens”. We can’t always have “flurries”; a significant result is only possible if we immerse ourselves in everything that Consulting brings us: People, the world of companies and their circumstances. And, for that, we have to stop, imagine ourselves in that Client’s shoes, in his “home”, take over what is generously offered to us and expand the perspective, always striving to be worthy of sharing and to deliver with Competence. And on that journey, we transform others and… ourselves.
From the depth of the long observation that immersion provides us we emerge enlightened to support the journey of those who trust us.
What they say about “constant learning” is also not true (at least for me, of course). We don’t always learn (or grow) in the process; not always do we gain knowledge (and probably not always do we give it!). But if learning can sometimes not be constant, it is always consistently present. The experience underwent does not allow the page to remain blank. Some story will be told. And it will leave its mark and we will continue our journey.
And in Consulting, strictly speaking, we cannot work alone. Our Team Partners are the key. But this casting, which ideally should be carved in Heaven, does not appear suddenly: complicity and communion energised in the unconditional way in which we share talents and put them at the service of something greater; that communication that occurs only in a glance between people who know each other well; the joy of working together; co-construction with differentiated and therefore differentiating Talents; the stories lived, the ones we still aspire to live, this whole picture must exist. And it takes work to reach this Championship level. A lot of work.
What is so magnificent about this activity is the People. Always People. I never cease to be touched (sometimes even moved) by the unconditional way in which people we meet in the companies give us back so generously their World, their experiences, their “journey” and their working environment.
Many of these interlocutors are so inspiring for the strength they reveal, for the pragmatism they echo, for their Courage (Coragem) (in times of opposition), for their Heart (Coração) or for their Competence (Competência) (you could now create the 3C model ;). I’m joking! Consulting is (really) in our bones… 😉
There are really Special and Memorable People in the Organisations, so it always feels very rewarding when I can return to them and to the Companies where I have been Happy 🙂
I think the Consulting firm actually chose the Clients I wanted. 🙂
